Birthday Cakes

Accommodating any theme, the possibilities are endless!
A Classic Sheet Cake

This cake was designed with our 90 year-old Catholic grandmother in-mind.  Her favorite flavor of cake is strawberry so the cake is marbled white and strawberry cake.  I iced it in a standard vanilla buttercream.  I kept it simple with a pastel color theme and varying sizes of roses.  I added some texture to the sides of the cake with a striped pattern and softer pink buttercream borders.  This is a 1/4 sheet cake and served 24 people.

My Niece's 9th Birthday

Our niece came up for her 9th birthday party and I offered to make the cake.  She wanted a cat theme.  The cake is standard white cake but I dyed the cake batter and made a pink camouflage cake.  The cake is iced in buttercream icing with buttercream decorations.  I did pink drop flowers with small white candy pearls and black ruffles around the sides.  I chose the pink scrolls to add more depth to the side of the cake.  The bottom and top borders are buttercream pearls.  I decided that a figure would be perfect on the top of the cake.  After hours of searching with no luck, I resorted to modeling my own cat figure out of fondant.  This is a 12" square cake and served 36 people.

My Son's 3rd Birthday

Our son loves all superheroes so for his 3rd birthday, he had an Avengers theme.  Rather than the typical 2 layer cake, I chose to torte the cake and made 3 layers.  The cake was velvet but I did a red velvet, blue velvet, and white cake layers.  I filled and iced it with standard buttercream.  I used a star design to pipe each point on the cake to create the textured effect covering the cake.  With only a bottom border, the shield design is the center of attention.  For an added touch, I created the marbled cupcakes.  I paired colored velvet batter: blue and red, red and yellow, red and grey, and green and purple.  I iced them in black buttercream and drew the Avenger logo on the tops.  The cake is an 8" round with a dozen cupcakes and served 26 people.

A Beautiful Spring Birthday

My mother-in-law's birthday was coming up so as a surprise, I created this floral basket weave cake.  The cake is gluten-free chocolate with almond buttercream icing.  I added the basket weave design to the sides to create the illusion of a floral basket.  All the decorations, besides, the pink buttercream roses, are royal icing with airbrush accents.  I chose a variety of flowers including violets (her favorite), pansies, lilies, bluebells, apple blossoms, and others.  I added two royal icing butterflies to complete the spring scene.  This is one of the most detailed cakes attempted thus far.  It is an 8" round cake and serves 14 people.

A True Tiger Fan

My boss is one of the biggest Tiger fans I've ever known.  I was approached by the women in our office to create a Tiger's birthday cake out of cupcakes.  The baseball bat is made of vanilla cupcakes, iced with buttercream, and free-hand decorated with buttercream.  It is based on the Louisville Slugger personalized bats.  The baseball cake consists of chocolate cupcakes and iced with standard buttercream.  The Detroit "D" with the Tiger's tiger is a buttercream transfer image.  These cakes were made of 33 cupcakes and serves 33.

A Saints Fan

My co-worker asked me to create a cookie cake for her boyfriend's birthday.  He loves mint chocolate and Saints football.  The cookie is Chocolate Mint Chip and I paired it with a mint buttercream.  I kept it simple with a basic yellow shell border and created a buttercream transfer image of the Saints Fleur de Lis logo.  This is a 12" square cookie cake and serves 18 people.

Love of Baseball

One of the ladies in our office at work approached me, wanting to order a birthday cake for her son who just turned 17.  She was having a small party for him and needed a cake.  Her son wanted the chocolate cake with a whipped cream center.  We paired the cake with the almond buttercream to add a little something extra.  When we were trying to decide on a design, she mentioned he was trying out for baseball next year at school and wanted to do something with that.  I suggested we make the cake a baseball with a basic border around the bottom.  This is an 8" round cake and serves 14 people.

My Little Pony

For my best friends brithday, I surprised her with her favorite cake decorated with her favorite TV show characters.  The cake is standard red velvet with a cream cheese center.  I used almond buttercream to ice the cake and decorate it.  I used candy pearls for a little extra on the ruffles.  I used Rainbow Dash and Twilight Sparkle figurines so she could add them to her collection.  This is an 8" round cake and serves 14 people.

An Elegant Birthday

My mother had to miss one of her friends birthdays this past week.  She came to me looking for a birthday cake that didn't say "Happy Birthday".  Her friend loves jewelry, especially pearls.  To add a more pronounced touch of elegance, I covered the cake in chocolate ganache.  I topped it off with a rose and rose bud arrangement with violets to accent.  This is a 6" round cake and serves 8 people.

An Out of This World Birthday

When my son turned 4, he knew exactly what theme he wanted for his party...Buzz Lightyear!  My son chose chocolate as his cake flavor.  Since all he does is eat the frosting, I decided to dial back the sugar and use fondant (not as thick as buttercream).  All the parts are made of fondant and hand painted to match Buzz's space suit.  I found the perfect green number "4" covered in "space dust".  Rather than sculpt Buzz, I bought a toy to top the cake.  My son still carries it with him everywhere.  This cake is a 10" round cake and serves 21 people.

A New Fan and an Old Fan

I received an order over an email from a woman who was having a party for her father and 1 year old son.  She lived in Chicago but was from Michigan.  Her father was turning 73 and her son was turning 1.  She settled on a baseball scoreboard with Detroit Tiger colors.  Their logo is a buttercream transfer image which I enhanced once on the cake to give it a more 3D look.  We added the Detroit "D" on the front and back of the cake sides.  She chose vanilla with vanilla buttercream.  This cake is a half sheet cake and serves 36 people.

A New Fan and an Old Fan (cont.)

This cute baseball cake went along with the Tiger Scoreboard cake.  Since her son was turning 1, she also wanted a smash cake for him.  We stuck with the baseball theme and designed this cake like a baseball.  The sides have a basic carved design and a basic teardrop border.  This cake was also vanilla with vanilla buttercream.  This cake is a 4" round cake and serves 5 people.

An Elegant Mickey Mouse

A co-worker was having her sister in from out of town and it was her birthday.  Her sister loves Disney and so she was looking for a Mickey Mouse cake that didn't look like it belongs at a child's party.  We went with a marble cake and vanilla buttercream.  I kept the borders simple, focusing on details in the design.  I added the swirls with Mickey ear accents all around the sides.  I decided to go simple on the top with a basic Mickey head.  This cake is an 8" round cake and serves 14.

Come to the dark side...there will be cake!

This R2D2 cake was ordered for a friend's birthday.  The cake itself is five layers high.  All the parts are edible except for the legs and feet.  The details are made out of fondant.  The cake is chocolate with chocolate buttercream icing.  This cake is two 6" round cake with a 6" dome and serves 20.

A New Level of Decadence

This cake was made for my step-mom's birthday.  She loves chocolate, strawberries, and lemons.  The cake is torted in four layers, filled with alternating lemon curd and strawberry fillings, and iced in chocolate buttercream.  To top it off, it's covered in chocolate ganache.  To add a beautiful accent to the top of the ganache, I added yellow sugar glass.  This cake is a 6" round cake and serves 20.

A November Baby

This cake was ordered by a coworker for her granddaughter's 1st birthday.  She was born in November and they decided on a turkey buttercream transfer with pastel yellow buttercream.  This is a 4" smash cake.
